Extremely rare First Edition of this work composed by an English adventurer who played a significant part for the English presence in Egypt.
The son of a hops merchant, George Baldwin (1743-1826) sailed for Cyprus from the age of 17, started a silk business in Acre in Palestine, and settled in Egypt in 1775. He was the only English merchant in the country by 1786, when he was appointed Consul General and became the first English diplomat serving in Egypt, after a great deal of effort on his part to draw the attention of London to the economic and strategic importance of the region, in which French businesses were already well established.
Author's only publication on Egypt (except for a 3-page essay on slave trade in Egypt, published in 1790). This book contains the account of his route in the Middle East, as well as his maintained correspondence with the English authorities, in which he comments the geopolitical situation of the country, mentioning in particular the danger of the French ambitions upon the region.

Ces écrits furent notamment remarqués par Voltaire, qui en notera la mérite, "et ils fournissent des armes aux déistes de la deuxième moitié du siècle" (Encyclopedia Universalis).
Le sixième volume, qui ne fait pas partie de l'édition, est intitulé "A Collection of Political Tracts. By the author of the dissertation upon parties", London, Davies, 1769. Ce dernier ouvrage porte quelques rousseurs.

Rare impression américaine de cette biographie du littérateur anglais John Wilmot, comte de Rochester (1647-1680), écrite par son confesseur et exécuteur testamentaire l’évêque de Salisbury Gilbert Burnet (1643-1715).
Malgré sa vie agitée et émaillée de scandales, le comte de Rochester occupe un certain rang dans la littérature britannique; il contribua en particulier au développement de la poésie satirique. Graham Greene (1904-1991) notamment, s’était intéressé au personnage et publia sa biographie en 1974.
“Rochester is generally considered to be the most considerable poet and the most learned among the Restoration wits. A few of his love songs have passionate intensity. He is also one of the most original and powerful of English satirists” (Encyclopedia Britannica).
La présente édition fut imprimée dans la ville américaine d’Albany (New York), où la typographie ne fut introduite qu’en 1772.
